From 0Mbit to 20Mbit to 7Mbit

by on Nov.29, 2007, under Computers, General, Technology

This is a follow up from my previous post…My ISP finally managed to fix my ADSL connection. All worked very well again. For a whole day. Then “The Return of The Blinking Led” was on air. Damn, no… not again! Another call to the help desk  and the promise that they will fix the problem as soon as possible. In the meantime I remembered that at the time I activated the ADSL subscription I had a ISDN line, which is not compatible with ADSL, so they installed a second, data-only,  line to be used for ADSL. Now I don’t have ISDN anymore… so I connected the ADSL router to the main line et voilà… ADSL is back! only 7Mbit but that’s better than nothing.

From 4Mbit to 20Mbit to 0Mbit

by on Nov.20, 2007, under Computers, General, Technology

At the beginning of this month my ISP sent me a letter stating that my line is being upgraded from 4Mbit to 20Mbit at no cost… WONDERFUL!

Well, not quite wonderful after all…

Last Wednesday evening I configured my Hamlet router to connect using ADSL2+ (as required by the 20Mbit upgrade). All went well and in a matter of seconds I was surfing at the blazing speed of 20Mbit (more or less). Then I went to bed (sometimes I need to sleep, too). The day after I went to the office as usual. When I came back home I was welcomed by the IBALOTR (Infamous Blinking ADSL Led On The Router).

DAMN! The ADSL link was gone!

Maybe just a temporary misalignement between my router and the ISP? It MUST be that! I switched off the router and, after a never ending minute, I turned it on again. No way. Still blinking. I then make a call to the customer care where they told me that the upgrade I REQUESTED (never made such a request) was taking longer than expected. They expect to have it resolved in about THREE WEEKS!!!!! Obviously it doesn’t matter that the day before the ADSL link was working perfectly at the speed of 20Mbit… bah!

Now I have to use this sloooow (and very expensive) internet access through my bluethooth cell phone… until they manage to resolve the problem… or my patience runs out.
